Dear Historians, Fancy writing on Christmas Day! My small boy has just given me " a necklace with a medal for Mom" something he bought at a local junk shop with his limited pocket money. Not knowing what it was I simply typed in the motto on the medal to see what it meant. One has to smile, it is a Woodman of the World medal and the "fancy rope" as my son calls it. is someones hair!!!!! I realise now it was a gentlemans watch chain. Is the company American and the watch chain has simply ended up in Australia?

Tibor Kalman and at least one of his disciples, Sagmeister have wrestled with the foibles of material culture as designers and empathic human beings. Their writings and musings are inspirational. Their practice of using client fees and brands to do good in the world with their work is a path to consider for anyone trying to resolve the conflict between commerce and conscience.

Just a slight correction to the comment by Glen Moultrie. The Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Company is still 'alive and well' and has been since the Woodmen of the World was established in 1890. They were one of the insurance companies that made it thru the depression years without 'folding'.

In looking through old cemetaries in Alabama I find many Woodman of the World upright tombstones. They all have Dum Tacet Clamat. I believe that was an insurance company which went belley up and a lot of prople lost precious money. The company was in ill repute from then on. Glen Moultrie

If a "fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees", you must also conclude that a wise man sees not the same tree a fool sees.

This begs the question of who the fool and wise man might be.

Take Damien Hirst for example. Large animals in vats of formaldehyde. Had such work been done in Rome, would the Louvre today contain a 2000 year old dead animal in a glass case?

If Jackson Pollock splattered paint on a canvas during the Renaissance would the results be in every art history book?

Has it taken a world of 6 billion people to produce enough wise men to purchase this artwork, or has it taken 6 billion people to find the unlikely combination of wealth, a fashion victim sense of high culture, and plain good old fashioned foolishness to create this market?

It seems to me that the crowning achievement of our age is that even tastelessness has become a high art form right down to pink inflatable bunnies posed in front of mirrors. Ah. Kulture and sophistication, derived from the word "sophism" of course.
