This is the website of Hugh Graham, an experience design researcher and strategist living and working in Denver, Colorado (USA). I am the principal of Twine Studios, a collaborative experience design firm providing services to a range of clients, including start-ups, agencies, non-profits, and great big corporations. I have a background in theater and film, which informs my design work.
As an interaction designer, I use stories to create compelling and engaging environments, real or virtual. I’ve worked as an information architect, writer, and editor for websites, environments, videos, and shows of numerous different types.
As a design strategist, I use people-centered research, prototyping, and facilitation to help organizations develop and implement innovative ideas. I focus on using story-centered approaches to provide interdisciplinary teams with new tools that encourage rapid, iterative design and development.
Since 1995, I’ve done research, strategy, and design for clients including CH2M Hill, Universal Studios, US West/Qwest, Janus, Aspen Ski Company, Limited Express, Maytag, Virgin, Heifer International, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the University of Denver, among others.
From August 2010 through July 2013 I worked as Director of User Experience for The1stMovement, working with clients including Cisco, DaVita, Lexus, Ricoh/Pentax, Lee Jeans, TravelStore, and others. I am a former Director of User Experience for Sapient Corporation and Director of Content Strategy at iXL. Prior to working in interaction/experience design, I had extensive experience in film, video, music and theater, including projects for MGM/Universal, Paramount, Viacom, the Guthrie Theater, the Walker Art Center, and the Lab at Belmar.
I’m active in the American Institute of Graphic Arts, and I frequently teach and do public speaking engagements on subjects including innovation design and the use of story in the design process. I also work in digital storytelling and occasionally do performance and installation art.
I have won awards from the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and the Colorado Council for the Arts, and I am involved with the arts and design community in Denver, including the River North Art District (RiNo, rivernorthart.com) and Ironton Studios (irontonstudios.com).
I live in the Highland neighborhood of Denver with Hadley Hooper and Maddie the dog.
